A relaxing cruise holiday can take you to some amazing cities. These wonderful destinations may boast iconic landmarks, colourful cuisine and colossal monuments but simply sticking to urban surrounds could mean you miss untouched landscapes, wonderful wildlife and active thrills found only in pristine national parks.
So why deny yourself such pleasures? Combine cruising with hiking on these amazing excursions to see more of the natural world.
Inca Trail
Listed as one of the ‘New Seven Wonders of the World’, Machu Picchu plays host to around one million people each year. The full trail takes around five days, but there’s also the option to walk a shorter distance with the inclusion of a shuttle bus, cutting the time down to a three hours and 40 minutes before reaching your final destination. Along the way, you’ll discover yet more breathtaking ruins that are only accessible on foot and admire the unspoilt landscapes found all along the trail.
Torres del Paine National Park
Tucked away in Chile’s Patagonia region, Torres del Paine National Park is amongst the best trails available to avid hikers. Bright blue icebergs, sparkling white glaciers and extraordinary mountains bring a sense of tranquillity to the region.
Highlights that are featured start with the headlining Torres del Paine themselves, three granite towers inviting experienced climbers to grasp the best views in the house. More notably, the region is filled with wildlife, so be sure to bring your camera to capture the majestic South American grey fox.
Norwegian Fjords
As anyone who has sailed along the Norwegian Fjords will most likely tell you, sailing in and amongst Scandinavian peaks offers more than a lifetime of views. If you would like to drift away from the kayaking and fishing tours that are offered, hiking to the top of the mountains can open a spectacular landscape and the chance for that perfect holiday photo.
Otherwise, meeting the locals and learning a thing or two about preserving these national treasures is always a must.
Now that we have suggested a few ideas, you might be left wondering why you would choose a cruise. Being able to move between locations, only having to unpack once and getting a good taste for each culture can bring forth more than your average holiday. Plus, as an added benefit, you can take full advantage of the onboard spa, choosing from a number of different treatments to rejuvenate yourself before the next big hike.
Keeping yourself healthy is a must and an abundance of dining venues can help you to choose from a wealth of nutritious dishes or indulge in a few guilty pleasures.
Having said all that, the option to stay on board is always welcomed. Large floor-to-ceiling glass windows bring the outside in and highly trained crew-members will make sure your experience is ever so special.
