Finding the perfect cruise destinations can be a difficult task, especially when you are not aware of the ports that are on offer. The Mediterranean, Alaska and the Norwegian Fjords are all top choices for cruisers who prefer opulent palaces, jaw-dropping landscapes and soaring hot temperatures, but what you may be missing out on is the chance to experience discovery. So here are our five little-known cruise ports that are worth a visit in 2019.

MAHESHKHALI ISLAND, BANGLADESH

Until recently, Bangladesh had yet to be discovered by the cruising world and was seen to be a challenge for the larger cruise lines. But, with growing interest in the region, it was only a matter of time before someone took advantage of this opportunity. Being the main draw for many travellers, Maheshkhali Island is an excellent opportunity for adventurers to appreciate an authentic, untouched experience. The indigenous communities continue to follow traditional values that have been passed down through generations and are still on display today in the form of Buddhist monks and apprentices that dedicate their lives to worshipping in their sacred temples.

PAPEETE, FRENCH POLYNESIA

Situated in the South Pacific Ocean, Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia and is arguably the furthest port of call from any other continent. As you will quickly realise, this brings more benefits than drawbacks, as this remote paradise will leave you lost for choice on where you should start your never-ending adventure. Blue lagoons are begging to be explored, whilst relaxing on the black beaches reminds you of the island’s volcanic history. Dine at local restaurants along the city streets or find charming performances in neighbouring villages where friendly locals will be waiting with open arms.

PETROPAVLOVSK KAMCHATSKY, KAMCHATKA PENINSULA

The Kamchatka Peninsula thrives off its wilderness lands, where a wealth of mammals, birdlife and diverse terrain open the path for plenty of hiking trails. The peninsula alone has around 150 volcanoes which might sound scary at first, but only 29 of these are active. As much of the areas are uninhabited, there are few roads within the region, so you will have to use more unconventional methods when travelling, such as sledding and off-road vehicles. Once you reach the peaks, you can head in search of some of the notorious wildlife, including brown bears and Steller’s sea eagles, or just admire the city skyline under the stars.

FALKLAND ISLANDS

Often visited as part of an Antarctic cruise that starts in Ushuaia, the Falkland Islands are a British Overseas Territory situated off the coast of Argentina. This archipelago is widely-known for its history and cliff-lined coasts that support an abundance of wildlife. As the capital, Stanley has just over 2,000 residents, so there is no need to worry about crowded ports and bustling cities. As you journey between the islands, be sure to keep a keen eye out for penguins. There are five different species (king, rockhopper, Magellanic, gentoo, and macaroni) found across the Falklands.

BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

Although more popular than the other ports on our list, Baja California is still not considered a go-to cruise destination. However, the Mexican region is more than sandy white beaches and seaside resorts. Allow your adventure to take you into the small towns and cities, discovering some of the hidden gems that Mexico has to offer, including the small town of Todos Santos, which has been awarded the title of ‘Magical town’. Local galleries are filled with spectacular artistic pieces, with many more crafts being auctioned on the streets, ready to be purchased as souvenirs. Finally, to add to all of the excitement, breathtaking sunsets and beautiful marine life are a photographer’s dream, so don’t forget to bring your camera for the perfect holiday picture.
