Royal Caribbean's Anthem of the Seas - April 2015
Royal Caribbean's Anthem of the Seas – 22-04-2015 – GoCruise
After months of publicity and press releases, the excitement surrounding Royal Caribbean's newest ship Anthem of the Seas could not be greater. As the day finally dawned the intrepid GoCruise team set out for Southampton and the hot topic of conversation was whether Anthem of the Seas could live up to the hype surrounding it.
Having checked in online, printed out our boarding cards and uploaded our photos and information in advance we passed through customs and were stepping on board in just ten minutes eager to explore.
With so much to see and do onboard, it would be impossible to detail everything, so here are a few of our highlights.
Royal Caribbean is renowned for their industry firsts and Anthem of the Seas has many to boast; North Star is glass pod which rises 300ft above the ship and offers unparalleled 360° views of the ship and ocean, whilst iFly by Ripcord offers the first skydiving simulation at sea. This 23ft tall wind tunnel offers a one-of-a-kind experience to float above the ship on top of winds of up to 125mph. The Bionic Bar features the first robot bartenders at sea. Simply swipe your WOWband and pick your drink and stand back while the robots mix and shake your drink to perfection.
As well as these exciting new innovations, there are the classics which are synonymous with Royal Caribbean including the FlowRider surfing simulator, rock climbing wall, H2O Zone and two outdoor swimming pools. For adults there is an adults-only solarium featuring two indoor pools, the Royal Casino, shopping on the Royal Esplanade from Armani, Bobbi Brown and more, a fitness centre and beautiful spa facilities.
Plus, there are lots of family activities going on in the excellent teen and kids clubs. SeaPlex is a great multi-functional use area, the largest activity space at sea in fact, with activities ranging from bumper cars, roller-disco, basketball, table tennis, X-Box gaming and much more… fun for all the family!
You can even enjoy circus skills lessons such as the flying trapeze or a club night hosted from a floating DJ booth!
When it comes to entertainment Royal Caribbean takes it to another level. The resident show in the Royal Theatre is “We Will Rock You” and it certainly does. This West End class show will have you out of your seat and dancing in the aisles.
In Two70°, you are treated to the technological delight which is “Spectra’s Cabaret”. Using a two storey 270° digital projection screen which wraps around the entire rear of the ship, six robotic screens, singers, dancers, musicians and aerial performers, which all fully interact with each other you can enjoy a fully immersive experience the like of which cannot even be found on land! During the day Two70° transforms into the ‘living room’ of the ship. The screens are retracted and you can enjoy magnificent views out to sea whilst you sip on a drink or enjoy a snack from the café.
If you want to dance the night away the Music Hall is the place for you. The Music Hall provides both a live music venue, bar and disco, as well as pool tables for those who prefer a more chilled out evening.
Staterooms and suites
With 2,090 staterooms onboard, you have plenty of options to choose from. Over three-quarters of all staterooms feature balconies. 375 of inside staterooms feature ‘Virtual Balconies’ - 80 inch LED projection screens, which show a projection of the outside of the ship in real-time to give you the feeling of being on the outside of the ship. All staterooms are spacious, but none so much as the suites. A wide range of suites are available; the grandest being the Royal loft suite. This two storey suite features a mezzanine level bedroom, two bathrooms, living area with dining table, additional sleeping facilities, media room, bar, 3 private balconies (one with a whirlpool) and panoramic views.
The dining options available to you onboard Anthem of the Seas are extensive. Royal Caribbean are particularly proud of their Dynamic Dining concept which allows you to rotate around the ships main dining venues. The venues are; American Icon Grill, presenting classic American Cuisine; Chic, featuring stylish contemporary cuisine, Silk, serving pan-Asian dishes from the Far East; and The Grande, the formal dining venue with a classic dining experience.
Alternatively if you are looking for something healthier you can choose to dine in Devinly Decadence where all meals have been created by Chef Devin Alexander and are below 500 calories. Coastal Kitchen provides Mediterranean cuisine using the freshest ingredients and is available exclusively to Suite Guests and Pinnacle members.
If you are after a casual dining option, you can pop into Windjammer Marketplace for buffet dining, Sorrento’s for pizza, Johnny Rockets for fast food on the go, the SeaPlex Dog House, Café Two70°, Café Promenade, La Patisserie or Vintages Wine Bar at any time.
There are also several speciality venues. These include Jamie’s Italian from Jamie Oliver, Izumi Japanese cuisine, Michaels Genuine Pub, Chops Grille for hand-cut steaks and Prime Table inside Chops Grille for a private dining experience, and Wonderland Imaginative Cuisine to stimulate your senses in a magical dining venue.
Whilst this is a ship of gargantuan proportions, you never feel like you have been walking for miles because there is always so much to see along your route and ample lifts and signage to guide you on your way. The entertainment and facilities are unparalleled on both land and sea and you will never be bored. The staff are welcoming, attentive and friendly right from the moment you arrive at port to the time you disembark. Food options are immense and you can always find something to tickle your taste buds at any time of the day and night.
And, of course, we have talked about all this without even mentioning that you will wake up every day with a new destination outside your window, just waiting to be explored!
