Celebrate 170 years of Fred. Olsen in Cadiz - February 2018
GoCruise – Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines - 27/02/18
Three years ago, the four Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines ships gathered all together for the first time to mark 165 years since the founding of Fred. Olsen. The prestigious occasion – which was attended by both Fred. Olsen and Fred. Olsen Jnr - saw Balmoral, Black Watch, Boudicca and Braemar all gather together in the Norwegian port of Bergen. Local entertainment, on-ship and in-port competitions, and the chance to visit all four of the fleet’s ships all made up the schedule for the day.
Following on from the success of this unique event, Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines has decided to hold another similar event in the Spanish port of Cadiz later this year. The unique event, set to take place on 10th September 2018 and will mark 170 years since Fred. Olsen’s beginnings in shipping, will once again see all four of the Fred. Olsen ships gather for a day of celebrations.
On board and on-land entertainment will revolve around local acts, while there will also be another chance to visit all four ships of the Fred. Olsen fleet. There will also be specially-themed menus available in the on board restaurants, adding to the flavour of the occasion. Each ocean-bound vessel will embark on an itinerary out of the UK, providing four opportunities to experience the celebrations in Cadiz. This week, GoCruise takes a closer look at what you can enjoy on board each of these four special sailings.
The Flavour of Spain | Sail from Southampton | Braemar
14 nights | 31st August 2018
Departing out of Southampton, Braemar offers an opportunity to experience the delights of Portugal and Spain, blending charming towns with golden beaches and historic cities. After spending two days at sea, you will reach the Portuguese capital of Lisbon, known for its colourful architecture and traditional cable cars. This is then followed by calls to the highly-renowned beach destinations of Almeria and Malaga before enjoying a taste a home in Gibraltar.
The beauty of embarking on a sailing with Fred. Olsen is the opportunity to sail along narrower waterways to destinations which are generally considered inaccessible to larger vessels. This becomes apparent upon traversing the pristine Guadalquivir River, which will take you to the historical landmarks of Seville – known for its historic architecture including the Cathedral, which is the largest Gothic building in the world. You will then reach Cadiz in time for the celebrations on the 10th September before spending two days at sea heading back to Southampton with many long-lasting memories.
Azores & Madeira | Sail from Liverpool | Black Watch
14 nights | 1st September 2018
Liverpool offers a direct link to the Atlantic, which is why this cruise is ideal for anyone who has ever considered a journey to the Azores Islands. After spending three days at sea, you will be able to soak in the pristine natural elements and the Portuguese colonial-style architecture of Horta and Ponta Delgada. This will then be followed by a visit to the beautifully rich island of Madeira, which is known for its stunning botanic gardens and charming old town.
This will then be followed by a chance to experience the spectacular celebratory events in Cadiz, which is sure to leave you with many long-lasting memories. As you travel back towards Liverpool, you will enjoy calls into the Portuguese capital of Lisbon and Leixoes, for Oporto.
Cities of Spain & Portugal | Sail from Newcastle | Balmoral
14 nights | 2nd September 2018
Newcastle is the northernmost located of all the cruise ports in England and this cruise offers a direct link to some of the finest cities and towns in Spain and Portugal. After spending three days aboard the ship soaking up the on board atmosphere, you will head to Leixoes for a chance to visit Oporto. This will be followed by a call into Malaga before enjoying an opportunity to experience the vibrant sights, smells and sounds of the Moroccan city of Casablanca.
The climax of your cruise takes place in Cadiz before heading back to Newcastle, but not without enjoying a few port calls along the way. There will be opportunities to visit the Portuguese capital of Lisbon and the charming Spanish cities of Vigo and El Ferrol before enjoying another two nights on board prior to returning home.
Island-Hopping to Suez | Sail from Dover | Boudicca
15 nights | 5th September 2018
The fourth and final of these four sailings is slightly unique in the sense that is the only cruise not to operate as a roundtrip. This means that, over the course of 15-nights, you will be able to travel further afield. Departing out of Dover, you will spend two full days at sea before heading to Leixoes for Oporto and then travelling onto Cadiz for the celebrations.
While all the ships will be returning to the British Isles after the events in Cadiz, your journey aboard Boudicca is only just beginning. Heading westward, you will visit the warm beach island of Ibiza before calling into the Maltese capital of Valletta and the Crete capital of Iraklion. This is then followed by a majestic transit of the Suez Canal as you had towards the Jordanian port of Aqaba, which provides a unique opportunity to see the Modern World of the World that is Petra.
Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines is renowned for operating sailings aboard smaller-sized ships that can take you to some of the most beautiful destinations on earth. The on board atmosphere is synonymous of more classical-style cruising while the attentive service will make you feel right at home.
