Virgin Voyages announce details of first ship and UK visit - July 2018
GoCruise – 23/07/18
Sir Richard Branson’s intention to join the cruise industry has been well known for some time and now, a year after the official unveiling of the billionaire’s cruise line, brand new details have been announced regarding Virgin Voyages’ first ship.
She will be named ‘Scarlet Lady’, which, according to the line, is reflective of “the brand’s iconic mermaid image”, which will appear on the hull of the adult-only ship. The ship is due to launch in 2020 and Branson has unveiled intentions to ensure the atmosphere on board the ship is reflective of the line’s ethos. One fundamental aspect of this will be the presence of a female-dominated crew throughout the ship, taking roles that are generally dominated by males across the industry.
Virgin Voyages will launch the ‘Scarlet Squad’, an initiative set up with the aim of recruiting and monitoring female crew in on board areas of the ship including marine, technical and hotel management. In addition to this, the line also announced the company will try to eliminate the use of passenger-facing single-use plastics including drinking straws, bottled drinks, condiment packets, shopping bags and hot drink stirrers.
New details of the features available on board the ship were also announced last week, with the emphasis being on health and well-being. Nine public areas around the ship will be based around the “Vitamin Sea” programme of health, fitness and rejuvenation. The Crow’s Nest area will feature a private sundeck, where guests can participate in sunrise and sunset yoga. There will also be the Athletic Club, which holds an outdoor boxing ring, gymnastics equipment, cabanas and a sports bar.
Other features on board the ship will include a well-being pool, Gym and Tonic Bar, and Redemption – the ship’s spa, which will feature a hydrotherapy pool, mud room, salt room, cold plunge pools and quartz beds. The spa thermal suite will also host night-time parties with a DJ.
To round things off, Sir Richard Branson also confirmed Virgin Voyages’ first ship will head to the UK prior to operating sailings in the Caribbean. Speaking to press at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy, Branson said: “On our way to the Caribbean we might pop up the Thames,” Sir Richard said. “I want to show her off. We’re all rather proud of this ship so and obviously UK is where we are born... Maybe Southampton but we’d definitely love to come and show her off to everybody.”
Scarlet Lady will be followed by two additional ships, both of which will emulate her design and on board features. These luxurious vessels will ooze a unique sense of style and sophistication which has never before been seen on the seas.
